I went out driving today, the funnest part of hot rodding to me, just driving. I love to drive; I love everything about it, the freedom, feeling the road through the car, the power. Well only some can enjoy the power part, me personally want more of it always more power. But the same can be said about feeling the road through the car, I’ve driven some of the newer really nice cars out there and they give a completely different feel of the road than my old 69 does, actually it gives what seems to me an amplified lack of feel. In some of the newer cars I feel a real separation from the road that I’m just not comfortable with it.
Driving should be an experience, and I know the average commuter doesn’t want an experience; they just want to get to work and get back but not me. I see driving as a sport, as a hobby, as something I work at and get better at and enjoy more each time I do it. Some will read this and know exactly what it is that I’m trying to explain, and some will never understand the odd obsession I have with a seemingly simple everyday task.
Which brings me to the final aspect of driving that makes it so enjoyable to me, freedom. Unlike power and a hard to describe “feel” for the road freedom is something I’m betting that almost all of us experienced at the magical age of 16 when we where let loose on the road by ourselves for the first time. The feeling that now we can go anywhere, do anything, and it doesn’t matter if it was a bimmer your parents gave you or an old beater you saved up for, the freedom felt is the same although I would have to argue that the old beater would also present a bit of an emotional attachment the bimmer wouldn’t, those of you that have drove a real wreck for an everyday driver know what I mean.
So when I have the time, the gas, (and she’s running), you can bet I’ll be on the road, driving like I stole her.
